Manchester City are in Saudi Arabia this week to take part in the Club World Cup, which they enter at the semi final stage looking to book their place in Friday’s final.
The Club World Cup sees the reigning champions of each continent across the world as well as the domestic champions of the host country compete in order to be crowned champions of the world.
Pep Guardiola’s side will be aiming to win fifth title of 2023 by winning their first ever Club World Cup to join their titles of Champions League and UEFA Super Cup, which the club also won for the first time in their history this calendar year.
Last season’s treble winners aren’t in the best of form ahead of their mid-season trip to the Middle East though, with their giving up of a 2-0 lead at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday to draw 2-2 leaving the champions with just one win in six league games.
The Citizens currently fourth in the Premier League, five points behind league leaders Arsenal but could be a slow as sixth by the time they play their next league game due to their match this weekend being postponed due to their duties in Saudi Arabia.
This will be the fourth time Guardiola will have managed a side to the Club World Cup, having won the trophy twice before with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, and once with Bayern Munich in 2013.
Manchester City take on Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds in their Club World Cup debut this evening, a team who have already had to play once to reach the semi final stage, upsetting the odds to beat North American champions Club Leon of Mexico in the second round.
Managed by Maciej Skorza, the former Lech Poznan boss and ex-Poland assistant manager, the club booked their place in this year’s competition by being crowned champions of Asia back in May.
Urawa Reds, based in Saitama in Tokyo, are taking part in their third Club World Cup, achieving a third place finish back in 2007 after losing 1-0 in the semi finals to AC Milan.
The Japanese season came to a close at the start of the month having started back in February, with the Reds finishing fourth in the J1 League, 14 points behind champions Vissel Kobe, and losing three of their last four matches of the domestic campaign.
